Unjar LIVE with Sheena Sood, PhD

Sheena Sood, PhD (she/her) is a Philly-based, second-generation Desi American, healing justice visionary, and activist-scholar. Sheena earned her PhD in Sociology at Temple University. As a scholar, her research and publications explore topics of race and ethnicity, immigration, political solidarity, and social movements. In one research project, she studies the political mobilization and alliance-building efforts of South Asian immigrant communities in the U.S. Her second research project examines the moral implications of yoga’s popularity and recent deployment in the military, policing and popular culture. Sheena argues that the fascist governments of India, the U.S. and Israel (occupied Palestine) weaponize yoga and spirituality to advance ethnonationalist projects and sanitize their reputations. As a certified advanced yoga teacher and wellness practitioner from an upper-caste Hindu family, Sheena strives to curate yoga, chakra, and ayurvedic workshops through a decolonial, healing justice framework that acknowledges the interplay of oppressive hierarchies in yoga. She often encourages herself and others to imagine how yoga can be purposed toward embodied liberatory praxis. Sheena enjoys teaching mindfulness and yoga to young people, creating plant-based magic in her kitchen, and curating joy with her sister tribe. She is available for bookings at yoga studios, universities and student-life centers, and can be reached at sheena.sood1@gmail.com.
